CarPro.

There are two words that evoke excitement amongst performance fans like none others: Hot Hatch. I’ve yet to come across one that hasn’t lived up to its performance promises – and then some. That’s especially true for Motor Trend’s 2026 Car of the Year – the Volkswagen Golf GTI along with its sibling the R which I’ve reviewed here. After design and tech updates for 2025, the Golf returns for 2026 without any signifiant updates. But that isn’t deterring buyers. GTI sales are up 17.2% year over year in the second quarter.

Exterior

There are 3 trims: S, SE, and Autobahn. My entry-level GTI S review vehicle wears Slate Blue Metallic and rides on 18-inch 5-spoke design alloy wheels fit with all-season tires and GTI-red-painted brake calipers.

Article continues below this ad

The GTI is distinguished by a unique grille with a signature red accent line, bumpers, side skirts, exterior trim, rear roof spoiler, chrome-tipped exhaust and red GTI logos. GTIs also feature side mirror puddle lights that project a stylized golf ball pattern with a GTI logo.

GTS S models are equipped with LED headlights, with Daytime Running Lights and an Adaptive Front-lighting System with dynamic cornering lights and integrated static cornering lights as well as an LED taillight cluster.

Article continues below this ad

Performance

A turbocharged 2.0-liter four cylinder delivers 241-horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque. Acceleration doesn’t disappoint and neither does its sporty exhaust note. A smooth-shifting 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission adds to the driver engagement with its paddle shifters. While VW’s start/stop system is noticeable, it can be deactivated.

Performance-minded GTI equipment includes a torque-sensing limited slip differential, cross differential system, vented front and rear brakes, and four-wheel sport suspension. (An adaptive damping system is exclusive to the Autobahn trim.) Of course there are functions designed for very experienced drivers on closed courses like racetracks; ESC Sport and ESC Off.

Article continues below this ad

Interior

An eye-catching Titan black and plaid cloth interior greets you when open the driver’s side door. The cabin’s silver hardware and new-last-year carbon gray decor looks great. It looks and feel premium with the use of soft-touch plastics integrated with soft-touch materials.

The GTI’s red accents give the driver-centric cabin a sporty vibe – my favorite red accent being the GTI-badged, red-accented, perforated-leather steering wheel that’s also heated. The GTI’s black headliner also adds to the sporty ambiance.

Article continues below this ad

Bolstered front sport seats with GTI logos comfortably hold you in place. They’re heated, too, nice to see for an entry-level trim. The driver’s seat power reclines, but other adjustments are manual. The GTI features stainless steel pedals at your feet.

The 10.25-inch VW Cockpit Pro looks fantastic with bright easy to ready text and graphic. It also displays performance stats info including lap times. A freestanding 12.9-inch multimedia touchscreen display runs VW’s Discover Pro system is equally impressive, Standard wireless App-Connect connects to CarPlay and Android Auto. It’s also where you’ll access ambient lighting. I’m not a huge fan of the dual-zone climate control and audio volume sliders which seem difficult to use.

Article continues below this ad

The glossy black center console is home to a short gear shifter, push-button start and the electric parking brake.

The 60/40 split second row offers passengers nice legroom, but you lose some headroom due to stadium seating. Features include a drop-down armrest and soft-touch seatbacks.

Cargo space is terrific and there’s a center pass through to the cargo area for longer items.

Article continues below this ad

Other standard entry-level S features include a 7-speaker audio system, 15W wireless charging pad, automatic rain-sensing windshield wipers, push-button start, carpeted front/rear floor mats and USB-C ports for both rows.

The GTI has a list of safety features- including IQ Drive with hands-on semi-automated capability that really handles highway curve well.

IQ Driver includes Travel Assist , Front Assist, Active Side Assist (aka Blind Spot Monitor); Rear Traffic Alert; Adaptive Cruise Control Stop and Go; Lane Assist, and Emergency Assist designed to provide semi-automated vehicle assistance in a medical emergency.

Article continues below this ad

I’m also happy to report the S trim is also equipped with dynamic road sign display, park distance control front and rear and rear view camera.

The Golf GTI is Motor Trend’s 2026 car of the year for a reason. Driving dynamics are exceptional. This is a hot hatch designed for people who love to be engaged while behind the wheel. And yes, even without a 6-speed manual it ditched last year. The smooth-shifting dual clutch transmission is superb. Steering is sharp and responsive – handling fantastic – braking exceptional too – and you don’t need to be on track to experience all of the above. Engineers tuned the GTI to be great, and it is.

What You’ll Pay

Last year I could say the Golf GTI S rang it at just under $34,000. This year I can’t say the same. The MSRP has jumped roughly $2K, with my test model nearing $36,000 without options.

Article continues below this ad

I hate to use the word practical in the same sentence as hot hatch – but the great thing about hot hatches isn’t just that they’re super fun to drive, but they’re also roomy and serve as great daily drivers with a lot of cargo space. That said – do you buy new or used in this case given the pricing difference. I think it’s worth comparing options given that the models don’t differ between 2025 and 2026.

Article continues below this ad

2025 VW Golf GTI 2.0T S

What I Liked most: Driving Dynamics and ride, GTI Steering Wheel, Multimedia/Digital Display.
What I would change: Not a fan of the volume and climate sliders.
MSRP: Base: $34,590.
