A European carmaker has tapped into its hi-tech automotive expertise to build what it claims is one of the world\u2019s safest e-bikes.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen has teamed up with premium e-bike brand n+ to launch the Volkswagen Smart eBike that costs as much as a motorcycle. <\/p>\n

It is the first production e-bike to combine a radar-activated rear camera with an integrated dashboard display.<\/p>\n

Claiming to have the world\u2019s safest e-bike is a huge call, but at the heart of the design is Volkswagen\u2019s Smart View system, which merges real-time radar with a rear-facing camera to spot approaching traffic.<\/p>\n

The radar is similar in principle to the blind-spot monitoring systems found in modern cars, detecting vehicles approaching from behind before activating an orange alert that appears across the camera view.<\/p>\n

Mounted on the rear mudguard, the radar-camera unit continuously monitors traffic up to 70m behind the rider and can sense if a vehicle is approaching at higher speeds.<\/p>\n

At the same time, a second camera provides a live rear-facing video feed to the bike\u2019s front OLED display.<\/p>\n

The system is designed to give riders an earlier warning of vehicles approaching from behind, particularly in situations where traffic may be difficult to hear because of wind noise, quiet roads or the near-silent operation of electric vehicles.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen has also incorporated yellow light strips that run along the top tube and can operate as a marker during normal riding.<\/p>\n

When the radar detects an approaching vehicle, the lights automatically brighten. These same strips double as turn signals and brake lights, working alongside illuminated Volkswagen badges on the front and rear.<\/p>\n

The bike features a 490Wh removable battery that offers up to 162 km of range and a ride weight of 27.5kg for the medium spec.<\/p>\n

It features a Shimano Cues U4000 9-speed drivetrain, paired with a 250W motor delivering 85Nm of torque.<\/p>\n

And for those who want an even more spectacular experience, Volkswagen also offers optional heads-up display glasses. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s similar technology to that found in fighter-pilot helmets that can cost upwards of $400,000.<\/p>\n

But luckily, the glasses sold by Volkswagen are nowhere near that six-figure mark, rather costing around $700.<\/p>\n

For $700, riders will get a projection that displays radar-activated blind-spot warnings, turn-by-turn Google Maps navigation, and ride information, including speed, distance, and battery status.<\/p>\n

The various systems have been designed to work together and give the rider a better view of what is around them.<\/p>\n

The Volkswagen Smart eBike is priced from about $4500 and goes as high as A$6599.<\/p>\n

However, it remains unclear whether the Volkswagen-branded eBike will officially be sold in Australia. <\/p>\n

Currently, the website requires an $49 deposit, with the full balance due in Q4 2026.<\/p>\n

Volkswagen Accessories chief executive Peter Jost says the Volkswagen Smart eBike demonstrates how technologies already established in the automotive world can be transferred to two wheels.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe optional radar-activated rear-view camera is an unprecedented innovation for production eBikes, and reliably detects approaching traffic and helps address the blind spots that can leave riders vulnerable,\u201d Mr Jost said.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBy combining this technology with intelligent lighting and connected rider equipment, the eBike shows what modern assistance systems can achieve \u2013 enhancing awareness, supporting safer
