The AMG division therefore sees little sense in keeping its own performance GLA variant under heavy camouflage. A recent encounter shows the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric with only light camo covering the front, rear, and side skirts, where most aerodynamic upgrades reside.

We’ve been following the testing campaign of the upcoming Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric for the past year, and only last month did we find out its final look. Well, almost, because that impression is based on the Mercedes-Benz variant, which launched at the end of July. Nonetheless, now that the “civilian” GLA has been fully unveiled, the AMG variant should not take long to drop its clothes.

Judging by our latest encounter with the Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric, the Affalterbach house doesn’t see it as necessary to keep the camouflage on this pocket rocket. The prototype lost almost all wraps, with only the front, rear, and side skirts still covered in camo tape. These are, unsurprisingly, the body parts that feature the most visible aerodynamic upgrades.

However, we can already guess the sportier lip spoiler and the traditional AMG grille, especially after we’ve seen the AMG CLA 45. The side skirts appear to be wider, justifying the camo tape. Finally, there are important modifications at the rear, including a typical AMG diffuser and a larger roof spoiler. Headlights are left exposed, which means they are carried over unchanged from the Benz variant.

Photo: Baldauf

Similar to its sedan brother, the AMG GLA Electric wasn’t deemed worthy of a dedicated AMG platform. It still uses the MMA architecture with proper modifications to justify the AMG branding. These include the same three-motor configuration powered by axial flux motors. If the AMG CLA 45 is any indication, we should expect a similar 500 kW / 671 horsepower output.

The AMG GLA prototype even retains the solid brake rotors that we’ve seen on the AMG CLA 45. Thanks to its crossoverish stance, the GLA is undoubtedly heavier, but apparently not enough to warrant drilled rotors. That, and the fact that three performance motors can provide a tremendous amount of regenerative braking, up to 300 kW according to AMG. This results in an up to 5 m/s² deceleration, or 0.51 g, an impressive braking effort.

The 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) acceleration is expected to be equally impressive, even though it will take slightly longer than the 2.7 seconds that the AMG CLA needs. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, the Mercedes-AMG GLA Electric will be able to replenish the battery almost as fast as it depletes it during heavy work on a racetrack. A charge from 10% to 80% takes 22 minutes when plugged in to a DC fast charger that can output at least 330 kW.

At the end of July, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the “civilian” variant of the GLA in its full glory.
