The first aircraft equipped with the new system is Lufthansa Airbus A320neo D-AINM, known by the last two letters of its registration as “November Mike.”

The inaugural Starlink-connected service took place on 19 August 2026, operating flight LH234 from Frankfurt to Rome. The flight departed Frankfurt at 12:15 local time. At around 10,000 metres altitude, Lufthansa CEO Jens Ritter activated the system.

Photo: Lufthansa

D-AINM will now continue operating regular scheduled flights with Starlink available to passengers.

It is the first step in one of Europe’s largest airline connectivity upgrades. Lufthansa Group plans to equip around 850 aircraft across its airlines by 2029.

Which Lufthansa aircraft has Starlink?

The Lufthansa A320neo D-AINM is the first aircraft to go live with Starlink and will operate normal scheduled services. Passengers could find Starlink WiFi onboard as the aircraft moves around Lufthansa’s European network.

Up to ten more A320-family aircraft operated by Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines are expected to be equipped with Starlink before the end of 2026.

Photo: Lufthansa

Installation will take place primarily at Lufthansa Technik in Berlin and will be combined with planned technical checks to reduce additional aircraft downtime.

Is Lufthansa Starlink free?

Lufthansa Group WiFi powered by Starlink is free for passengers who sign in using a Miles & More membership or Lufthansa Group Travel ID. Passengers can create a Travel ID free of charge.

The offer applies regardless of cabin class, meaning an Economy passenger receives the same free connectivity entitlement as someone travelling in Business or First Class.

Photo: Lufthansa

That represents a significant change from Lufthansa’s existing FlyNet model. Under the current FlyNet service, Travel ID and Miles & More members receive free messaging, but higher-speed internet normally costs extra.

On short- and medium-haul flights, Lufthansa currently advertises FlyNet Premium at €6 for flights of up to 90 minutes and €8 for longer flights. The service is limited to speeds of up to 4 Mbit/s. On long-haul flights, Premium internet starts at €15 for 2 hours and €25 for the entire flight.

So Starlink changes both the WiFi performance and connectivity pricing for Lufthansa customers.

What can passengers do with Lufthansa Starlink?

Lufthansa says the higher bandwidth is intended to make the onboard connection behave much more like internet on the ground.

Passengers can use it for normal web browsing, messaging and streaming, as well as more demanding applications such as cloud-based work and collaborative documents. Passengers can also connect multiple devices.

Lufthansa says the available bandwidth can, in some circumstances, be faster than passengers’ home or office internet connections.

Can passengers make calls using Lufthansa Starlink?

Not currently. Despite the increased bandwidth, Lufthansa does not want its cabins turning into flying conference rooms.

Passengers are asked to use headphones when playing audio or video. However, passengers cannot make voice or video calls and are asked to refrain from live-streaming while on the aircraft.

Photo: British Airways

This policy differs from Aer Lingus and British Airways, which both permit voice and video calls on their Starlink connections, with the requirement that passengers use headphones when making calls.

Lufthansa’s restrictions are intended to avoid annoying fellow passengers, though Starlink can technically support high-bandwidth services like telephony. The airline says the rules were developed following passenger surveys.

Does Starlink work from gate to gate?

Yes. Lufthansa describes its new service as providing connectivity “from gate to destination,” rather than only once the aircraft reaches cruising altitude. The airline says Starlink will offer connectivity “from take-off to landing,” including over oceans and deserts.

Starlink uses a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit rather than relying on ground-to-air connectivity or Geostationary satellites, which are positioned much farther from Earth.

Photo: SpaceX

The lower orbit helps reduce latency, improving WiFi performance. Starlink’s large satellite network can provide coverage across areas where other aviation connectivity is unavailable.

For Lufthansa, that service range is particularly important because Starlink will eventually be deployed on everything from short European sectors to long-haul intercontinental flights.

Which Lufthansa Group airlines are getting Starlink?

The Lufthansa Group has said its other passenger airlines are preparing to also introduce Starlink, including SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Edelweiss, Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa City Airlines and Eurowings.

SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines will be the next group carriers to receive equipped aircraft after the initial Lufthansa installation.

Photo: Lufthansa

The plan covers both existing aircraft and newly delivered aircraft. By 2029, Lufthansa expects approximately 850 aircraft across the Group to have the system installed, making it Europe’s largest airline group offering Starlink connectivity.

When will my Lufthansa flight have Starlink?

For now, finding a Starlink-equipped Lufthansa flight will largely be a matter of luck.

Lufthansa says passengers cannot yet check for Starlink availability before travelling because only selected aircraft have been equipped. The airline plans to introduce a flight-search function on Lufthansa Group airline websites as more aircraft enter service with the system.

Photo: Lufthansa

The rollout will broaden as more installations are completed. Up to ten additional Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines A320-family aircraft are scheduled to receive Starlink during the remainder of 2026. Other Group airlines will begin joining the programme.

However, the full Group transition will take several years, with the 850-aircraft programme scheduled for completion by 2029.

Until the installation programme is complete, passengers may encounter either the existing FlyNet product or the new Lufthansa Group WiFi powered by Starlink.

Why Starlink matters for Lufthansa

Connectivity is part of the competitive battle between airlines to improve the passenger experience.

“We are investing more than ever in our guests: in new aircraft, new services, greater choice on board and, of course, state-of-the-art and innovative technology,” Ritter said as the first aircraft entered service. “With Starlink, we will offer the fastest connectivity from take-off to landing, over oceans and deserts, and on short- and long-haul routes. That, too, is premium—and that is what Lufthansa stands for. The introduction of this service marks another milestone in the modernisation of Lufthansa.”

Lufthansa’s decision to make full high-speed connectivity free for Travel ID and Miles & More members follows the lead of other carriers that have introduced free Starlink for their loyalty program members.

Photo: Lufthansa Group

With hundreds of installations still to come, however, D-AINM is only the beginning of Lufthansa’s move to Starlink. Travellers can look forward to the service being common on the Group’s aircraft by 2029.

Lufthansa has operated its first passenger flight with Starlink WiFi onboard.
