BMW has announced plans to recall some 27,720 cars across the 5-Series<\/a>, 7-Series<\/a>, and 8-Series<\/a> model lines over an issue related to driveshaft connections that could experience premature wear and potentially lead to the vehicle rolling away, according to filings made with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> (NHTSA).<\/p>\n

According to the filing, the recall stems around the joint that serves to connect the rear differential, driveshaft, and transmission into one powertrain unit. If that joint does wear prematurely, the resulting damage can cause the vehicle to lose all of its motive power on the rear axle. In even rarer cases, BMW claims that the vehicles could also be at risk of rolling off on their own. Both situations come with an increased risk of an accident or injury, though BMW notes in the filings that there is no data to suggest that anyone has been injured as a result at this time.<\/p>\n

The recall specifically impacts the following machines: 2021\u20132023 540i \/ 540i xDrive \/ M550i xDrive, 2022\u20132026 840i \/ 840i xDrive, and 2024\u20132026 750e xDrive models. The documents show that some 18,150 5-Series models are impacted, while the figures sit closer to 2198 units for the 7-Series and 7372 units for the 8er.<\/p>\n

BMW will task its dealers with inspecting all of the impacted vehicles, at which point one of two repairs will be completed. If possible, the technicians will add additional adhesive to the joint in question, which should help preserve the part as intended. If said fix does not look viable, the technicians will instead replace the driveshaft and rear differentials. Owing to the fact that this is a recall-related item, there will be no charges associated with any repair work that needs to take place.<\/p>\n

The automaker plans to send notification letters to impacted owners by October 2. That said, it is always worth checking your car\u2019s VIN against the NHTSA recall search tool to see if your machine will require a dealer visit; a link to the tool is provided here<\/a>, though the search for this particular issue won\u2019t go live until that October 2nd notification date.<\/p>\n
