The pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) named former Thuringia state premier Bodo Ramelow (Left Party) for all three arbitration proceedings. The airline appointed former Hesse state premier Roland Koch (CDU) for Lufthansa Classic and Lufthansa Cargo, and labor law expert Günther Heckelmann for the low-cost subsidiary Eurowings and the discontinued regional subsidiary Lufthansa Cityline.

The group and the union agreed last week on a process that combines arbitration and mediation. While the three separate arbitration proceedings are intended to address the respective outstanding collective bargaining issues, the mediation is aimed, according to the information provided, at other, broader topics.

Strikes already on seven days so far this year

VC has already called its members out on strike on seven days so far this year. Hundreds of flights were canceled even during the ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Lufthansa. The company has put the cost of the industrial action at around €150m.

Officially, the negotiations are about pension provisions and pay. Behind the conflict, however, is also the board’s strategy of shifting aircraft, and with them crews, into flight operations where lower collective agreement terms apply.

According to VC, Ramelow, now a vice president of the Bundestag, is waiving his fee.
