{"id":76758,"date":"2026-08-21T20:05:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-21T20:05:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/76758\/"},"modified":"2026-08-21T20:05:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-21T20:05:24","slug":"germany-investigates-russia-ties-to-weapons-cache","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/76758\/","title":{"rendered":"Germany investigates Russia ties to weapons cache"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" alt=\"Germany investigates Russia ties to weapons cache\" title=\"Germany investigates Russia ties to weapons cache\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/1787331702.webp\" data-rjs=\"2\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Credit: Anadolu\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p> German intelligence believes a weapons cache discovered in a forest near Berlin last year was intended for assassinations carried out on behalf of Russian intelligence, according to media reports. <\/p>\n<p>Germany&#8217;s Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said federal prosecutors were investigating a suspect in Romania over suspicions of espionage and &#8220;the preparation of a serious act of violence threatening the state&#8221;, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cp9edjpvplpo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">BBC<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>While refusing to confirm reports of Russian links to the cache, Dobrindt said he could not rule out &#8220;the involvement of foreign powers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>For months security agencies have warned that Russian intelligence services are planning assassinations in <a href=\"https:\/\/news.az\/news\/germany-to-fund-50-million-chornobyl-restoration-effort\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Germany<\/a>, possibly targeting defence industry executives or opposition figures in exile.<\/p>\n<p>Dobrindt said that last October Germany&#8217;s domestic intelligence agency became aware of a possible weapons cache in the woods on the outskirts of Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>Officials located the stash with the help of the Berlin State police, and found two handguns and ammunition.<\/p>\n<p>The German security authorities suspect the weapons and ammunition found were intended for use in attacks.<\/p>\n<p>Reports in German daily newspaper S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung and the public broadcasters NDR and WDR say the cache was to facilitate targeted killings on behalf of Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Dobrindt said after the guns were rendered inoperable, the weapons cache was placed under surveillance for months but nobody was seen approaching it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This case demonstrates that we are operating under a high threat level,&#8221; Dobrindt said.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said prosecutors were investigating a suspect in Romania, who is being held in connection with planned parcel bomb attacks there. He said this would be taken into account when it came to a possible extradition.<\/p>\n<p>He described the suspect as a &#8220;low-level agent&#8221;, and declined to disclose his nationality.<\/p>\n<p>Several similar operatives had been detained so far this year, he said, including one person from Kazakhstan.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation follows previous accusations of Russian attacks on German soil.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, German political figures reacted angrily to a\u00a0CNN report that Russia had plotted to kill the head of Germany&#8217;s biggest arms company\u00a0Rheinmetall, Armin Papperger.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021 a German court jailed Russian national Vadim Krasikov for life for a murder in a Berlin park and\u00a0said it had been ordered by Moscow.
