TOWN OF MERTON \u2014 A portion of County Highway E in the Town of Merton remains closed, but construction to repair the culvert box the caused the closure earlier this month will begin Monday, according to a news release from the Waukesha County Department of Public Works.<\/p>\n
County Highway E continues to be closed to through traffic between County Highway Q and County Highway VV following the failure of a concrete box culvert, about a half mile north of County Highway VV. Emergency repair construction is scheduled to start Monday, with Waukesha County anticipating the reopening of County Highway E on Sept. 14, weather and site conditions permitting.<\/p>\n
The existing culvert is estimated to be 95 years old and carries stream flow from Lake Keesus west to the Oconomowoc River beneath County Highway E, according to the release. The failure on Aug. 4 affected both the culvert and the soil supporting the roadway, creating a structural and public-safety concern that requires a full closure while crews stabilize and rebuild the area.<\/p>\n
Repair work will include new steel supports and retaining structures, reconstruction of the affected roadway slope, installation of safety barriers, pavement and pavement-marking restoration, and final landscaping and site restoration, according to the release.<\/p>\n
Barricades and closure signage are in place for public safety. Local access will be maintained from both the north and south where feasible and safe; however, vehicles will not be able to travel through the closure area, according to the release.<\/p>\n
A signed detour route is being placed using County Highway VV, State Highway 83, and County Highway Q.
