ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A truckload of surplus food from this year\u2019s BMW Championship is going to Gateway180, a homeless shelter in downtown St. Louis.<\/p>\n
Gateway180 was the sole nonprofit organization selected to receive the surplus food from the tournament, according to a media alert from the organization. Gateway180 plans to share food it cannot use directly with other St. Louis-area nonprofits serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n
Kathy Connors is the executive director at Gateway180.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe BMW Championship team, this may not be their community, but they made it theirs while they\u2019re here,\u201d Connors said.<\/p>\n
Gateway180 has 125 beds available, making it Missouri\u2019s largest emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness. The shelter relies on donations and grants.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn a shelter budget and with a lot of federal cuts that have had influence or impact on our agency, it\u2019s incredible to get these things,\u201d Connors said.<\/p>\n
Catering company donates surplus around the country<\/p>\n
Gateway180 received the donation from Spectrum Catering, which provides catering at PGA Tours and golf tournaments around the country. No matter where they are, the company\u2019s surplus food goes to a local shelter.<\/p>\n
Gary Ormsby is an executive touring chef with Spectrum Catering who has worked at the company for decades.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt feels good, you know. Helping other people feels good,\u201d Ormsby said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s very important to help the homeless and anybody that doesn\u2019t have the privilege to come to the golf course. You\u2019ve got to help everybody. Everybody needs to help everybody,\u201d Ormsby said.<\/p>\n
Although the families of Gateway180 could not attend the tournament, they are grateful to be recognized.<\/p>\n
\u201cHere, the tournament feels a million miles away. But it\u2019s in our community. It matters to our community. And it\u2019s an incredible thing that all of our community matters to all of those involved,\u201d Connors said.<\/p>\n
