FRANKFURT, Aug 24 (Reuters) – Germany’s Uniper has signed a deal to import more than \u200c30 terawatt hours of gas a year from Equinor \u200cfrom 2027, the companies said on Monday, strengthening Norway’s position as the key supplier \u200bto Europe’s biggest economy. <\/p>\n
The deal, which runs until 2041, equates to nearly 3% of Germany’s annual gas imports, with Norway taking Russia’s place as the top supplier after Moscow ended most energy ties with the \u200ccontinent following its full-scale \u2060invasion of Ukraine. <\/p>\n
The deal marks Uniper’s latest move to diversify its supply base after a recent agreement with \u2060Canada, in an attempt to reduce the risk of shortages highlighted by the war in Iran. <\/p>\n
“This long-term agreement is an important step for the \u200bfuture of \u200bEurope’s energy system,” Uniper CEO \u200bMichael Lewis said in a \u200cstatement. “With this agreement, we are strengthening Germany’s long-term gas supply whilst at the same time deepening our cooperation with Equinor.” <\/p>\n
The companies also said they wanted to expand their cooperation to drive forward the development of natural gas with lower emissions, highlighting the reduced carbon intensity \u200cof Norwegian gas. <\/p>\n
The firms did not provide \u200bmore details about the cooperation. <\/p>\n
“This agreement highlights \u200bthe strong demand for \u200breliable, long-term gas supplies from the Norwegian continental shelf, \u200cwhich provide energy and industrial \u200braw materials with lower \u200bCO2 emissions than alternative sources of gas,” Equinor CEO Anders Opedal said. <\/p>\n
Sources previously told Reuters that Equinor is among the \u200bparties interested in state-owned \u200cUniper, which Berlin is seeking to divest after bailing out \u200bthe utility during Europe’s energy crisis in 2022. <\/p>\n
