This news comes just one month after Volkswagen announced it plans to drastically cut its global lineup due to European regulations, U.S. import tariffs, and rising competition from Chinese automakers.

“The global situation has continued to deteriorate over the past twelve months,” Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume told Reuters. “That is why we are acting now.”

Remember the Volkswagen Rabbit pickup?

The German automobile company has seen its profit margins cut in half between 2021-25, so the reduction is no surprise. Already in the U.S. market, the all-electric ID.4 will be discontinued for 2027, especially thanks to the elimination of EV tax incentives.

What is unclear is whether the new pickup truck will be completely developed by Volkswagen or in collaboration with another automaker. If it is the latter, sources suggest that it could be Ford Motor Company. Currently, the Volkswagen Amarok — a South African-built pickup — shares its platform with the Ford Ranger. Additionally, Ford uses Volkswagen’s MEB platform for the EV Explorer and Capri models that are currently built in Cologne, Germany.

2026 Volkswagen Amorok (Image courtesy of VW)

Thomas Shaefer, head of the Volkswagen brand, believes that there are growth opportunities for the pickup truck and large SUV sectors. At this moment, the only vehicle currently offered by Volkswagen in the U.S. that fits this segment is the Atlas, which is a three-row SUV.

It’s difficult to imagine a new truck coming into this space in the American market. However, I do believe there is a certain adoration for Volkswagen as a brand in the U.S. that could pay off.

What do you think?
