A 51-year-old Warren woman will surrender her luxury BMW vehicle after pleading guilty last week to residential mortgage fraud and other crimes in Wayne County Circuit Court, according to state prosecutors.<\/p>\n
Robin Young faces up to 20 years in prison after entering her plea on Friday before Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Donald Knapp. She also pled to one count of using a computer to commit a crime, a 20-year felony, and one count of filing a false tax return, a five-year felony, said Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.<\/p>\n
According to a news release, Young in 2024 filed a phony 2023 Michigan individual income tax return from Grosse Pointe Woods, where she claimed a tax refund of more than $374,000 was owed to her.<\/p>\n
State prosecutors said Young knew the Department of Treasury did not owe her that amount, but she still used more than $100,000 of the illicit refund to purchase a home.\u00a0During the mortgage lending process, Young lied about the source of the money to lenders, saying the Department of Treasury owed her the money knowing it did not.<\/p>\n
Young was charged by Nessel\u2019s office in May. The matter was referred by the Department of Treasury.<\/p>\n
State prosecutors said\u00a0Young will give up a BMW she purchased with the illegal refund. The vehicle will be sold, and the proceeds will be applied towards her restitution.<\/p>\n
\u201cTax and mortgage fraud siphons time and resources away from public services and harms hardworking Michigan residents who play by the rules,\u201d Nessel said in the release. \u201cWe remain committed to working with the Department of Treasury to pursue those who conduct these deceptive schemes.\u201d<\/p>\n
