More than 300 shoppers lined up outside Springfield\u2019s newest Aldi on Thursday morning \u2014 some as early as 4:15 a.m. \u2014 to celebrate the store\u2019s grand opening on the city’s east side.<\/p>\n
The store is located at 51 Fourth Ave., sitting on a former parking lot near the intersection of East Main Street and Fourth and Maplewood avenues. It sits directly next to the UEC Theatre and across from Dollar Tree. It is the second location in Springfield.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are thrilled to add a second location to the Springfield market. It’s been in the works for quite a while and you can tell from the turnout that it’s a hit and certainly popular amongst the community,\u201d said Alex Brandt, director of store operations. \u201cWe estimated that there’s a little over 300 people that turned out this morning starting at about 4:15 a.m., and the line keeps coming. So it’s been a fantastic grand opening new store for us so far.\u201d<\/p>\n

A line of shoppers stretched all the way down the building, while cars overflowed the Aldi parking lot and filled at least half of the adjacent movie theater lot.<\/p>\n
\u201cI get off work at 6 a.m. and I drove through here at 7 a.m. and there was already 75 people in line. The line already came to the end of the building,\u201d said Mandy Hagins.<\/p>\n
She said she\u2019s been praying for an Aldi to be built on this side of Springfield, where she lives.<\/p>\n
\u201cAbout nine months ago, I prayed, \u2018Lord, if we had an Aldi on this side of town,\u2019, and sure enough, they started building it,\u201d she said. \u201cWe got here at about 7:45 a.m. because it’s an answered prayer, so I’m like, \u2018let’s see what’s it all about\u2019, so I’m excited.\u201d<\/p>\n
Teresa Perkins, office assistant at the Aldi warehouse, said it\u2019s been one of the busiest openings they\u2019ve had.<\/p>\n
