A North Carolina man turned a routine traffic stop into a late-night demolition tour after fleeing police in a BMW X5. The pursuit ended after the SUV crashed through several fences and into two New Bern Parks and Recreation vehicles.<\/p>\n
WCTI reported<\/a> that an officer attempted to stop a black BMW X5 for a traffic violation around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 26, on U.S. 70. Instead of pulling over, the driver exited the highway onto the Pembroke exit ramp and continued onto First Street.<\/p>\n The incident was detailed by police and reported by local news outlets Thursday morning. A Craven County deputy joined the pursuit as the BMW traveled toward Neuse Boulevard, where the driver eventually left the roadway.<\/p>\n The BMW then crashed through several fences before hitting a Parks and Recreation trailer and an activity bus. At that point, the vehicle had turned a traffic violation into damage involving multiple pieces of city property.<\/p>\n The BMW Didn’t Make It Far<\/p>\n After crashing into the city vehicles, the driver got out of the BMW and started to run on foot. Officers continued to chase the suspect and took him into custody, ending a chase that had already done considerably more damage than a normal traffic stop.<\/p>\n Police identified the driver as 34-year-old Isiah Kirby of Maple Hill.<\/p>\n The pursuit involved both New Bern police and a Craven County deputy. What began with an attempted traffic stop on U.S. 70 eventually ended with the suspect on foot and several New Bern Parks and Recreation properties having a much worse night than planned.<\/p>\n A Long List of Charges<\/p>\n Kirby was charged with felony fleeing to elude arrest, four counts of hit-and-run involving property damage, reckless driving with wanton disregard, driving without an operator’s license, resisting a public officer, and driving without headlamps. He appeared before a magistrate and was being held on a $48,000 bond.<\/p>\n Police haven’t said what led to the original traffic violation. Whatever the reason, the decision to flee created a considerably longer list of problems.<\/p>\n What Came Next<\/p>\n The crash left more than a busted BMW.
