(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlbt.com\/2026\/09\/02\/jackson-born-grammy-winner-cassandra-wilson-dies-70\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wlbt.com\/2026\/09\/02\/jackson-born-grammy-winner-cassandra-wilson-dies-70\/\">WLBT<\/a>\/Gray News) &#8211; The mayor of Mississippi\u2019s state capital released a statement Wednesday after the death of Cassandra Wilson, a 70-year-old Jackson native and Grammy Award-winning jazz vocalist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cJackson has lost an extraordinary native daughter, and the world has lost a singular musical voice,\u201d Mayor John Horhn said. \u201cCassandra Wilson carried the sound, spirit and history of Mississippi with her wherever her music reached.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Hinds County Coroner Jeramiah Howard confirmed that Wilson died in Jackson Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Wilson, known for her deeply rooted performances in jazz, blues, gospel and folk, was celebrated globally for her distinctive vocal styling and emotional depth.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"figure-img img-fluid mx-auto d-block\" fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"FILE - US jazz musician Cassandra Wilson poses during an interview in Cologne, Germany on...\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/germany\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/CMYU7K3QNZAE5HWEPLWZI4ESFA.jpg\" width=\"980\" height=\"726\" \/>FILE &#8211; US jazz musician Cassandra Wilson poses during an interview in Cologne, Germany on Sept. 25, 2003.(AP Photo\/Hermann J. Knippertz, File)<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Wilson attended Jackson State University and Millsaps College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In his statement, Horhn pointed to Wilson\u2019s legacy of connecting generations and carrying forward traditional Mississippi music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cHer work had rare depth of character and a profound understanding of how music moves people, tells stories and connects generations,\u201d Horhn said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Horhn also recalled when Time magazine once recognized Wilson as \u201cAmerica\u2019s best singer,\u201d calling it a fitting tribute to an artist whose voice and imagination were unmistakable. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cCassandra Wilson showed the world the richness of Jackson and Mississippi music,\u201d Horhn said. \u201cHer legacy will continue to be heard in the artists she inspired and the pride she brought to her hometown.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Over her decadeslong career, Wilson earned multiple Grammy Awards and wide critical acclaim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cHer Grammy Award wins reflected the respect she earned across the music world, while her artistry made an impression on audiences far beyond the jazz community,\u201d Horhn said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">As Jackson mourns her death, Horhn expressed how much pride the artist brought to her home state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cOn behalf of the City of Jackson, I extend my condolences to her family, friends, fellow musicians and all who loved her music,\u201d Horhn added.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WLBT via Gray Local Media, Inc.
