BERLIN, July 29 (Reuters) – German state-controlled energy group Uniper on Wednesday finalised a 20-year liquefied natural \u200cgas purchase deal with Canada as the \u200ctwo nations deepen their partnership. <\/p>\n
In a preliminary deal in June, Uniper took \u200binitial steps to secure 2 million tons of gas per year from 2032 from Canada’s LNG project Ksi Lisims on British Columbia’s Pacific coast. <\/p>\n
That was after another German \u200cstate-owned gas importer, \u2060SEFE, secured some Ksi Lisims capacity in May. Uniper already agreed on long-term purchases with Canada’s \u2060Tourmaline a year ago. <\/p>\n
Those deals reflect European ambitions to bolster alternative gas routes after former main supplier, Russia’s \u200bGazprom, stopped \u200bdelivering in 2022, creating \u200breliance on U.S. supplies. <\/p>\n
Ksi \u200cLisims is backed by Western LNG, the Rockies LNG consortium and the Nisga’a First Nation. Gas liquefaction will be powered by hydroelectric dams. <\/p>\n
Reuters reported in March that Uniper was discussing more gas purchases with Canada, also \u200cto diversify away from U.S. \u200bsupplies that accounted for 96% \u200bof Germany’s LNG imports \u200blast year. <\/p>\n
Canada is keen to reduce \u200cdependency on U.S. buyers with \u200bexport deals involving \u200bJapan, India and Malaysia. <\/p>\n
Canada this month picked Germany’s TKMS to supply 12 submarines – seen as a \u200blikely trigger of \u200cfollow-up contracts including on rare earths, batteries or \u200benergy. <\/p>\n
