MCINTOSH, Ala. \u2013 The global chemical giant BASF’s layoff plan has officially affected its McIntosh production site. Due to rising comprehensive operating costs and pressure from the industry market environment, the factory’s profit margins have continued to narrow. BASF has decided to streamline the workforce at the McIntosh plant, planning to lay off approximately 100 people, a scale close to half of the site’s’ total workforce.<\/p>\n

In response to this layoff event, local assistance measures have been quickly launched. David Rogers, Executive Vice President of the Mobile Chamber of Commerce, stated that after learning of the BASF layoffs, the Chamber immediately connected with the factory’s local management team to extend a helping hand and is fully committed to providing workforce employment assistance and career development support to the displaced employees.<\/p>\n

He noted that Mobile has ample employment resources and can pave the way for displaced individuals through various channels such as vocational skills training and direct recruitment connections with enterprises.<\/p>\n
It is reported that the Mobile Chamber of Commerce will assemble a special service team to work on-site at the BASF McIntosh plant. The team will bring together vocational education and training institutions like Bishop State Community College and Coastal Alabama Community College, as well as local high-quality employer resources, to provide affected employees with one-stop, full-chain services including skills training, job matching, and employment connections, helping them achieve rapid re-employment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe sincerely hope that these employees can stay locally, put down roots, and continue to build their lives and careers here; this is also the core goal of our assistance work. Individuals with job-seeking needs can actively contact the Chamber’s workforce development specialists, and we will precisely match them with suitable employers and job resources,\u201d Rogers added.<\/p>\n
McIntosh Mayor Wilbur Dickson lamented that these layoffs have brought a heavy impact to local resident families, schools, community churches, and the entire neighborhood, with grassroots livelihoods and stable development facing significant pressure.<\/p>\n
According to BASF, this organizational and personnel adjustment will be implemented steadily in batches over the next year, and some production lines at the site are also planned to officially shut down in early 2027.
