In 2024, these expenditures reached 135.9 billion euros, accounting for 25.3% of total healthcare spending\u2014an increase of 5.4 percentage points compared to 2014, when the share was 19.8%.<\/p>\n<p>Key figures on nursing care spending<\/p>\n<p>From 2014 to 2024, nursing care outlays rose by 109.1%, from 65.0 billion euros a decade earlier. Total healthcare expenditure in 2024 stood at 538.2 billion euros, having increased by 64.2% since 2014. The rising costs are attributed to legislative amendments to Germany&#8217;s Social Code Book Eleven (SGB XI) that took effect on January 1, 2017, higher personnel costs for nursing staff, and demographic shifts.<\/p>\n<p>Nursing care services include basic care, treatment care, and intensive care, which are largely provided in outpatient and (partially) inpatient facilities, as well as in hospitals and within private households under home care arrangements.<\/p>\n<p>Comparison with other healthcare segments<\/p>\n<p>Physician services, covering basic, special, laboratory, and radiological diagnostics, accounted for 23.6% of total healthcare spending in 2024, with a 45.7% rise since 2014. Expenditure on pharmaceuticals represented 15.8% of total health spending, increasing by 67.5% over the same period.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t1.
