Sept 3 \u2014 BASF sued Apple on Thursday, accusing the iPhone maker \u200bof infringing the German chemical company’s patented face authentication technology in many iPhone and iPad models.<\/p>\n
In its complaint, BASF’s trinamiX \u200cunit said it spent the last decade developing technology to address a security \u2060gap that makes conventional face \u200brecognition systems vulnerable to spoofing, \u2060where fraudsters defeat face unlock features by using photographs, 3D-printed \u200cmasks and silicone replicas.<\/p>\n
The \u200ccomplaint said Apple did not employ BASF’s patented technology \u2060when it launched face authentication, known \u2060as Face ID, in 2017 with the iPhone X, but now uses it in a variety of iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPad Pro and other products.<\/p>\n
“Apple knew or should have known of the high probability that updating \u200cits iPhones and iPads to incorporate Face \u200bID using material and skin detection” infringed seven trinamiX patents, causing “substantial damages and irreparable injury,” the complaint said.<\/p>\n
BASF’s lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Midland, Texas seeks unspecified damages and a halt to further infringements.<\/p>\n
Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
The Cupertino, California-based company sold $196.5 billion of iPhones and $21.7 \u200bbillion of iPads in the nine months ending June 27.<\/p>\n
According to \u200cthe complaint, trinamiX’s origins \u200cdate from \u20602010, when BASF scientists working on organic solar cells made unexpected discoveries that led to the building of early three-dimensional camera prototypes.<\/p>\n
BASF created trinamiX in 2014 as a stand-alone entity to develop advanced \u200c3D and material sensing \u200btechnologies, and trinamiX holds more than \u200c800 granted or \u2060pending patents \u200bworldwide, the complaint said.<\/p>\n
