I tested all three at the same time, and I was particularly pleased with one of them, which only cost 39p. Baked beans are a simple yet delicious staple that many Brits have in their cupboards at all times. While they are cheap, they are also full of flavour and a good source of both fibre and protein.

In fact, a serving of baked beans counts as one of your five a day, making it easier and cheaper for Brits to get more nutrients in their diet. There are well-known brand names, with the most famous one being Heinz Beanz. However, supermarkets sell their own-brand versions as well. So, I wanted to see how the UK’s two cheapest supermarkets stood up against the iconic beans brand. I evaluated each based on flavour, and here are the results.

Two of them tasted quite similar (Image: Brian Dillon)

Price: 39p (425ml)

Lidl, the second cheapest supermarket in the UK, sells its own-brand tin of baked beans for just 39p, which is a stellar price for a food high in protein and fibre. However, the flavour didn’t do it for me.

Compared to the others, the flavour just wasn’t as strong as the others. There was a lovely sweetness, but the other two tins of baked beans just packed a bit more of a punch. However, it is a budget-friendly option that can easily be improved with a bit of black pepper, paprika and cumin.

Prince: £1.40 at Tesco (415g)

Heinz is perhaps the name most synonymous with baked beans. However, it’s not my winner. At £1.40 for just one can, it is certainly on the expensive end of the scale for such a basic household staple.

But there is no denying that these beans are tasty. And out of all of the beans in my taste test, it had the most sauce in the tin. It had a lovely, rich flavour with the right amount of subtle savoury bitterness.

But what puts this in second place is the price, because the winner tasted almost identical to it.

Aldi was the clear winner to me, and the price is just 39p (Image: Brian Dillon)

Aldi’s own-brand baked beans are the winner for me. At just 39p, they are more than £1 cheaper than heinz, but taste extremely similar. If you were to put these two in front of me without labels, I would struggle to tell the difference.

I guess the only drawback is that there isn’t as much sauce in the tin of Aldi beans compared to Heinz, but there was still enough to make it a proper, rich meal.

The flavour packs just enough punch, with the flavour being surprisingly rich. For this price, Aldi is where I’ll be going for my baked beans from now on.

In my latest taste test, I went to the UK’s two cheapest supermarkets, Aldi and Lidl, to buy…

[21128
21143,21144
post-85388","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-aldi","tag-aldi","tag-sud-nord
["GET
