German Chancellor Friedrich Merz\u2019s Christian Democrats (CDU) saw their share more than halved to 17.2 per cent.<\/p>\n<p>The result came as the European Commission considers tougher trade measures on China ahead of an <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3364791\/chinas-trade-grip-tightens-europe-clock-ticks-towards-october-deadline?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">October deadline<\/a> for Beijing to show \u201ctangible results\u201d on imbalanced trade.
