That was nearly a third fewer than in April 2025, when the agency counted 9,108 first-time asylum applications.

Developments in Germany match a Europe-wide trend: Across the European Union, around 780,200 asylum applications were registered in 2025, a decline of about a fifth compared with the previous year.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt of the Bavarian conservative Christian Social Union (CSU) party intensified border checks in May 2025 that his predecessor Nancy Faeser of the Social Democrats (SPD) had already extended to all German land borders. He also instructed the federal police to turn back asylum seekers too, except for the sick, pregnant women and other people in particular need of help.

Dobrindt: Migration increases reversed

The minister said on Friday that the lower asylum figures backed his plan. “We have turned a wave of migration into a migration turnaround,” he said.

The German government relied on border checks and was in the process of establishing a new migration pact in Europe “to further reduce the figures for illegal migration.”

A reform of the European asylum system is set to take effect on June 12, following years of negotiations. In recent months, EU member states also agreed on additional stricter rules, including measures allowing countries to deport migrants more easily to third countries with which they have no prior connection.

Connection element deleted

Until now it was necessary for asylum seekers to have a close connection to such a third country, for example through family members or a longer stay. In future it will be sufficient if an agreement exists between an EU member state and the third country.

The EU has also approved a bloc-wide list of so-called safe countries of origin. These include Morocco, Tunisia and Egypt in North Africa, as well as Kosovo, Colombia, and the South Asian countries India and Bangladesh.

Migrants from these countries are expected to be deported more quickly from Germany and other EU member states. However, returns will not be automatic, as individual asylum claims will still be assessed.

<img alt="FILE PHOTO: German Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt speaks at the Federal Congress of the German Police Union (DPolG) at the Estrel Congress Center.
