The Cobra OPTM X driver delivers reliable numbers swing after swing, but can consistency alone win you over?
When you’re trying to find the best golf driver for your game, you have to ask yourself what it is you’re after. Whether you want out-and-out distance or to hit more fairways, there is a club out there for you.
If there’s one word I keep coming back to with the Cobra OPTM X Driver, it’s consistency. Out of the entire OPTM lineup, this was the head that made the most sense to me in terms of reliability and accuracy, and I can completely see why it will be the model many golfers end up fitted into.
The X sits neatly between the extremes. It’s not chasing maximum forgiveness like the Max-K, and it’s not trying to be a low-spin bomber like the LS. Instead, it’s focused on hitting more fairways, producing repeatable ball flights, and giving you a driver you can trust swing after swing.
For my eye and my priorities off the tee, that counts for a lot. It may not be the most exciting option in the range, but sometimes the sensible choice is the one that actually lowers scores.
Looks and Design – 4/5
Visually, this was my favorite driver in the OPTM lineup. The head shape is compact, clean, and extremely tidy behind the ball, neither too big nor too small. It’s a shape that a lot of golfers are going to feel instantly comfortable with.
Behind the ball, I really like the contrast between the matte topline and the subtle, shiny carbon crown. The way the face blends into the crown frames the ball nicely and effectively highlights the hitting area; it looks very much like the face design we’ve seen on Titleist drivers over the last decade.
As with the other OPTM models, the big OPTM branding on the sole isn’t really my thing. But once the club is in play, that thought fades away. I particularly like the way they’ve designed the weight ports and the style of the weights themselves.
One downside is durability. The gloss crown marks up rather easily, and I’d have some concerns about how well that finish would age with long-term use.
Technology – 5/5
The OPTM X shares the same underlying tech story as the rest of the family, but it’s been tuned specifically for golfers who value accuracy and forgiveness.
Cobra’s AI-optimised POI (Product of Inertia) shaping and adaptive weighting focuses on reducing the club’s diagonal rotation rather than just chasing MOI numbers. With it, Cobra have created a driver that aims to tighten dispersion.
The forged face insert with H.O.T. Face Technology features 15 strategically placed hot spots across the face, and it really shows in how consistent ball speed is on strikes across the hitting area.
You also get FUTUREFIT33 adjustability with 33 independent loft and lie settings. As I’ve said with the other OPTM drivers, I still think this system could be simpler for the everyday golfer, but as a fitting tool, it’s undeniably powerful and gives fitters a huge amount to work with.

Performance – 5/5
From a performance standpoint, this was the most consistent driver I tested in the OPTM range.
I thought the launch was very good, and I think a lot of golfers will like how straightforward it is to get this club up in the air. My spin numbers stayed under control, never ballooning or climbing too much, and the resulting ball flight was penetrating.
Forgiveness across the face impressed me. My mishits were playable, the ball speed held up well, and dispersion was impressive.
It’s not the longest driver in the lineup. If your goal is to squeeze an extra 10 yards past your playing partners, there may be other options that suit you better. But if you want to hit a higher percentage of fairways and know exactly what your ball is going to do, this is the one I’d point you towards.
As with all OPTM’s the sound and feel are excellent. Impact is crisp and lively, and feedback is clear; you know where you’ve struck it, but you’re rarely punished severely.
Final Verdict – 4.5/5
The Cobra OPTM X is a very good driver and arguably the smartest choice in the entire OPTM lineup.
It’s consistent, forgiving, easy to launch, and confidence-inspiring, with a head shape that will suit a huge range of golfers. For me, it was the model that made the most sense from a fitting and performance perspective.
That said, I’ll be honest: as much as I respect it, I’m not sure I love it. It’s a bit too safe, a bit too sensible. To use an analogy, it’s the car you know is the right choice – reliable, comfortable, and efficient – but you still fancy the sports car in the showroom.
But if your priority is hitting fairways, keeping dispersion tight, and trusting your driver under pressure, the OPTM X absolutely delivers. It might not shout the loudest, but it quietly does everything very well.
