Cameron Young’s pursuit of a third win in his last five starts took an early hit during Sunday’s final round at the Truist Championship.

Playing in the penultimate group, Young endured a nightmare at the second hole, four-putting from 14ft and missing two short putts from inside 3 feet on his way to a double bogey that dropped him back to 10 under par.

Alex Fitzpatrick, who began the day with the 54-hole lead, also stumbled early at Quail Hollow. Fitzpatrick carded a double bogey at the par-4 third after a costly three-putt from 11 feet, including a missed 4-footer for bogey. Although Young responded immediately with a birdie at the third to climb back to 11 under, both he and Fitzpatrick quickly found themselves three shots behind Kristoffer Reitan through the opening four holes.

Reitan delivered the biggest performance of his young career at the Truist Championship, with the rookie capturing his maiden PGA Tour title in stunning fashion at one of the season’s premier Signature Events. The Norwegian star rose to the occasion against an elite field, producing a breakthrough victory that marked both his first PGA win and his arrival as one of golf’s emerging talents.

The 28-year-old Norwegian secured a commanding two-shot victory at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, finishing the Truist Championship at 15-under-par 269. His triumph in the sixth Signature Event of the season earned him a lucrative $3.6 million share of the tournament’s $20 million purse.

Young finished the tournament tied for 10th meaning he earned $500,000, more than $3 million less than what he would’ve expected when he entered the tournament as one of the favorites, following his victory at the Cadillac Championship in Doral just a week earlier.

Fitzpatrick managed to recover his form slightly to finish in fourth, earning $960,000. World number two Rory McIlroy endured a disappointing outing at Quail Hollow, with the four-time champion at the venue tumbling out of contention after posting a four-over-par 75 on Saturday. McIlroy finished the tournament tied for 19th, earning $242,000.

The six-time major champion also sparked concern after he was seen limping during his round at Quail Hollow, raising fears of a potential injury issue. However, McIlroy later downplayed the scare, insisting the problem was not expected to be serious.

“Yeah, I’ve got a blister on my pinky toe on my right foot,“ he explained. “But it’s underneath my nail. So I can’t really get to it or so it’s a little sore, but I’ll be all right. Started to feel it like Friday afternoon.“

McIlroy insisted the blister issue would not hamper his performances in the coming weeks, brushing aside concerns that the problem could impact his upcoming schedule. “No, not at all. No, that was — I wish that was an excuse, but absolutely not (laughing),” he replied. “No, it’s fine. I’ll be okay.”
