What you should know: Cleveland Golf is reviving one of the most influential wedge designs in golf history with the Limited Edition 588 Tour Action set. Designed once again with Roger Cleveland’s original shaping and turf interaction characteristics, the wedges combine the look of the iconic 1988 model with several of Cleveland’s current performance technologies.

The Deep Dive: There are very few golf clubs that transcend product cycles and become part of the sport’s design language. The Cleveland 588 is one of them.

When Roger Cleveland introduced the original 588 Tour Action wedge in May 1988, it arrived during a period when wedge design was evolving. Tour players often relied on heavily modified soles and hand-ground shapes, and many wedges lacked the consistency and versatility better players demanded around the greens. The 588 changed that.

Its rounded profile, compact teardrop shape and sole design quickly became popular, and over time the wedges established themselves as some of the most popular short-game clubs ever produced, helping golfers win hundreds of professional events. In many ways, the 588 wedges helped establish the template for modern wedges.

Now, nearly four decades later, Cleveland Golf is revisiting that shape with the Limited Edition 588 Tour Action wedges. And by ‘limited edition,’ Cleveland means it — only 588 three-wedge sets are being offered.

“For this release, we stayed true to the original shaping and turf interaction that made (the 588 Tour Action wedges) special, while integrating modern materials and technologies inside the club. It’s the same trusted look and performance, refined for today’s game.”

The three-wedge set includes a 52-degree gap wedge with 10 degrees of bounce, a 56-degree sand wedge with 12 degrees of bounce and a 60-degree lob wedge with 8 degrees of bounce. Each wedge was ground to Roger Cleveland’s original specifications and finished in chrome.

The heads are built using Cleveland Golf’s proprietary Z-Alloy material, which the company describes as softer and lighter than traditional wedge steel while also improving durability and feel. Inside the heads, ZipCore technology shifts weight away from the heel and hosel areas to reposition the center of gravity (CG) closer to the impact zone while also increasing moment of inertia (MOI) for added stability.

Each face also incorporates HydraZip and UltiZip technologies to improve spin consistency across a wider range of conditions. HydraZip uses different face-blasting and laser-milled patterns based on loft to help maintain spin in wet conditions, while UltiZip grooves feature sharper edges and deeper channels intended to improve debris management through rough, sand and moisture. The circular Rotex face milling remains part of the package as well, adding additional surface texture for spin and control.

Each of the 588 sets of the limited-edition 588 Tour Action wedges comes in a special box with a brass plate that commemorates the clubs.
