Scott Berliner, a 13-time Northeastern New York PGA Player of the Year out of Lake Luzerne, has qualified for the U.S. Senior Open. An assistant pro at Glens Falls, Berliner, 51, fired a 4-under-par 66 last week in final qualifying at New Haven, Conn., to share medalist honors. He is the 11th area player to qualify since the Senior Open was established in 1980. Scotia native Ron Philo Jr. was in last year’s field. This year’s event is July 2-5 at Scioto in Columbus, Ohio. … Former New York State Junior champion Kellen Dean of McGregor led a group of 13 Capital Region players who advanced from a New York Open qualifier Monday at Eagle Crest. The others: C.J. Strong (Troy), Ryan Davis (Normanside), Francisco Cupp (Saratoga Polo), Mike Fretto (Edison), Kieran Cummins (Wolferts Roost), Eric Spoth (Edison), Charlie Blake (McGregor), Brayden Dock (Glens Falls), Tim Latchford (Saratoga Polo), A.J. Cavotta (Anders Mattson Golf), Thomas Strandemo (UAlbany assistant coach) and Nolan Crowley (Saratoga Polo). Brevin Bennett of Norwich, Tanner LaTorre of Nassau, Hayden Knapp of Gansevoort and Maria Glavin of Waterford advance out of the recent PGA Junior Championship qualifier at Waubeeka (Mass.). They are eligible for the 50th PGA Junior Championship, July 28-31, in Frisco, Texas. … Glavin, 15, earned the first alternate spot in last week’s U.S. Girls’ Junior qualifier at Sunningdale in Scarsdale. Glavin shot an even-par 68, two behind the second qualifier.
