This week, Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr. spoke with retired Major League Baseball All-Star and World Series Champion Derek Lowe.

In his interview with Easton Jr., Lowe discusses his participation in this year’s American Century Championship, which will take place July 10-12 at Edgewood Tahoe and air on NBC and Peacock. He recalled playing golf with Kansas City Chiefs stars at the annual event and his major career pitching milestone.

“This will be my 13th year. Last year, I had a little stumble, then I came in 18th. I’ve had some success coming in a couple of seconds, a couple of thirds, “said Lowe, “Jonathan Thomas, American Century, they do an amazing job of bringing in such high-end quality and high-end golfers and high-end athletes. For me, growing up a huge sports fan, to be able to walk up and down the driving range and see the (Aaron) Rodgers and (Patrick) Mahomes and (Travis) Kelce and try to say, I fit in this whole scenario.”

Patrick Mahomes continues to rehab from last year’s knee surgery and isn’t scheduled to appear, but Travis Kelce is listed again as a participant. The Chiefs duo continues to break records and achieve major personal milestones, as Lowe did while pitching a rare no-hitter in 2002.

“I didn’t really start thinking about it like most pitchers don’t until the seventh inning, because that means you’re just one time through the lineup away, but I didn’t like the no-talking thing. You sit in the corner by yourself. No one looks at you, no one talks to you, and let’s be honest, they’re lucky,” said Lowe. “You do have to have your good stuff, but let’s be honest, there’s so much luck that goes into it. Look at some of the greatest pitchers in the game who never threw one, Pedro Martinez, you’re telling me, he didn’t have better stuff than me.”

Lowe no-hit the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Fenway Park, becoming the first pitcher to do so at Fenway Park since Dave Morehead. He faced just one batter over the minimum in the game.

“If you watch the game, which I have numerous times. There are a lot of mistakes. Pitches down the middle, they pop them up or roll them over, whatever. I do remember the ninth inning, we scored a lot of runs, and it just seemed like it took forever. Three pitching changes, and you’re just itching to go,” said Lowe, “I looked at myself, never thinking you had no hit stuff. As a contact pitcher, most contact pitchers rely on the ball being put in play. It was a day I’ll never forget. I’m not making light of it, but there’s a lot of luck involved, and it was just a very special day that I’ll never forget.”

The annual tournament awards $750,000 in prize money, much of which the celebrity players donate to local and national charities. Over the years, over $8 million has been donated to non-profit causes. Network television exposure on NBC/Peacock and a first-place prize of $150,000 make the celebrity tournament one of the most prestigious in golf.
