Rory McIlroy carded two bogeys during the final round of the Memorial Tournament, and one of them came after he swung and missed.

McIlroy is the second-best golfer in the world and teed off at Muirfield Village in Ohio, where the seventh signature event on the PGA Tour saw a weather delay during the third round after a TV broadcast tower was knocked over.

McIlroy was playing the par-five seventh hole and found himself just above the bunker, where his left foot was just inches away from needing to be placed in the hazard. When he swung to hit, McIlroy was in thick rough that allowed his club to go right under the ball in a moment that quickly circulated online leaving fans shocked.

“Golf is really hard and you don’t know it until you play it,” one user wrote. “The Pro’s have diminished in their mental fortitude, but gained in their physical abilities with the help of technology.”

Another added: “Been there Rory… just take another hack at it” and another joked: “They just let anyone win the Masters huh? This guy stinks.”

While fans laughed at the relatable moment, a frustrated McIlroy admitted it was a tough weekend to assess after finishing tied-12th at four-under par after a testing few days.

“Sort of like two steps forward, one step back,” said McIlroy following the round.

“I actually felt like I played some of my best golf on Friday afternoon and we just got tough conditions. Yeah, it was just hard coming in. And then yesterday felt like I left a few out there, and then today as well after the fast start. It would have been nice to keep that going but wasn’t quite able to keep the momentum that I had on that front nine.”

The career grand slam winner is ready to get back to the majors following a tie for seventh finish at the PGA Championship.

“But overall, like, not a bad week, got some good stuff out of it, and I’ve got a week to prep and get ready for Shinnecock,” said McIlroy.

“My iron play was better, wedge play was good,” said McIlroy.

“Off the tee still wasn’t where I want it to be. Thankfully the fairways at Shinnecock are a little wider than they are here. But, yeah, still need to work on that. I need to work on how I’m hitting it off the tee.

“But everything else, putting felt pretty good, for the most part. As I said, iron play and wedges were pretty nice. Yeah, just try to keep getting a little bit better each and every day heading into Shinnecock.”

McIlroy hit only 30 of 56 fairways at the Memorial, yet he still ranked 11th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. He carded his fifth straight top-20 at the Memorial and he’s looking ahead to the U.S. Open. He’ll return home to London on Sunday night, and then fly back to the New York area on Saturday.
