Shane Lowry went into the final round just four shots off the lead, but slipped down the leaderboard

Shane Lowry’s RBC Canadian Open challenge failed to get going on Sunday as American Bud Cauley claimed his first ever PGA Tour triumph.
The Offaly man began the day just four shots off the lead, but a bogey on the opening hole was not the start he wanted. And although the 39-year-old got birdies on the third and eighth, further bogeys on the tenth, 11th and 17th before a birdie on 18 saw him shoot a one-over 71, his highest score of the tournament, to finish on eight-under and in a tie for 29th place for the tournament.
Cauley hit a five-under closing round 65, which left him 17-under for the tournament to claim victory. England’s Matt Fitzpatrick had to settle for the runners-up spot in Toronto despite a superb six-under 64 in his final round.
The Yorkshire-born golfer heads into the US Open — a title he claimed four years ago — in fine form, despite falling two strokes short of Cauley.
“It’s a good week,” Fitzpatrick said. “I would have taken it at the start of the week. I felt like there was a lot of good stuff in there and I just needed to have it come out.”
Tommy Fleetwood began Sunday’s play just two shots adrift in a share of third, but a level-par 70 in his final round left him sharing 11th place on the leaderboard.
Lowry took home a cheque for €50,680 for his efforts as Cauley won over 30 times more than the Irishman, pocketing €1,519,045. Fitzpatrick earned €919,826.
