JORDAN — A strong final round from Annika Deboer helped the Minnewaska Area girls golf team secure a top-five finish at the Minnesota State High School League Class AA state tournament.
The Lakers shot a two-day total of 665 at the Ridges at Sand Creek, finishing fifth in the eight-team field after Wednesday’s final round. Minnewaska opened with a 336 on Tuesday before improving by seven strokes with a 329 in the final round.
Deboer led the Lakers with one of the top individual finishes in the tournament. The Minnewaska junior followed an opening-round 77 with an even-par 72 on Wednesday to finish tied for third place with a 149.
Deboer finished two shots behind Detroit Lakes’ Sophie Christianson, who won the individual championship with a 147 after rounds of 73 and 74. Totino-Grace’s Taylor Nelsen was second at 148, while Deboer and Holy Family Catholic’s Keira Schuster tied for third.
Kyra Nelson also closed strong for Minnewaska, improving by five shots in the final round. Nelson finished tied for 38th with a 171 after rounds of 88 and 83.
Anna Kollman finished tied for 46th with a 174 after matching rounds of 87. Ava Kollman tied for 52nd with a 176 after rounds of 89 and 87, Michaela Johnson tied for 55th at 177 after rounds of 84 and 93, and Lillie Ogdahl tied for 59th at 178 after rounds of 91 and 87.

Detroit Lakes won the Class AA girls team championship with a 625 after rounds of 310 and 315. Hill-Murray School was second at 636, Holy Family Catholic finished third at 650, and Totino-Grace was fourth at 652.
On the boys side, Minnewaska’s Thatcher Sherlin finished just outside the top 10 in the individual standings.
Sherlin opened the tournament with an even-par 72 on Tuesday before shooting a 76 in Wednesday’s final round. His two-day total of 148 put him in a tie for 12th place.
Southwest Christian’s Henry Johnson won the boys individual championship with a 138 after rounds of 67 and 71. The Blake School’s Jack Mark was second at 142, and Legacy Christian Academy’s Braylon Ylkanen finished third at 144.
The Blake School won the boys team title with a 585 after rounds of 292 and 293. Southwest Christian finished second at 588, Totino-Grace was third at 590, and Detroit Lakes took fourth at 603.
