Jason Drew was on Captiva Friday to kick off Memorial Day weekend “Gulfcoasting” at South Seas Resort, where the energy was high as the third annual South Seas Tarpon Tournament launched at sunrise. More than 45 anglers fueled up on the docks before heading out for a long day of tarpon fishing — all to support Folds of Honor, the nonprofit that provides educational scholarships to the families of fallen or disabled military members and first responders.Last year’s tournament delivered standout results, with 41 tarpons caught by 36 boats and more than $250,000 raised, enough to provide the equivalent of 50 educational scholarships for families in Lee County. Organizers are hoping to surpass that impact this year as the event continues to grow in both participation and purpose.Jason caught up with Shawn Farrell, general manager of South Seas, who shared how the resort is expanding the Memorial Day weekend festivities. New this year is the South Seas ‘Golf Scramble’, debuting Saturday, May 23, at The Clutch, the resort’s Beau Welling-designed golf course. The scramble adds a second day of friendly competition while continuing to raise funds for Folds of Honor.Shawn also gave Jason a tour of Captiva Landing, the resort’s newest attraction. The family‑friendly waterpark features a lazy river, private cabanas and towering waterslides — and Drew did not hesitate to take the plunge himself, giving viewers a firsthand look at the fun awaiting guests throughout the holiday weekend. The Memorial Day observance at South Seas also includes a special ceremony honoring fallen veterans, featuring the Lee County Honor Guard and paratroopers. It’s a meaningful reminder of the purpose behind the weekend’s festivities and the mission of Folds of Honor. For more information on the Tarpon Tournament and the ‘Golf Scramble’, visit the South Seas website.WATCH THE FULL STORY ABOVEDOWNLOAD the free Gulf Coast News app for your latest news and alerts on breaking news, weather, sports, entertainment, and more on your phone or tablet.
