Larry Trufant, a longtime resident of Abington, Massachusetts — a small town that sits about 20 miles south of Boston — has donated about 20 acres of abutting land to Strawberry Valley Golf Course.

A plaque dedication ceremony was held at 9:30 a.m. May 23 at the course on Bedford Street in Abington. The event included presentations from town officials and remarks from state Rep. Alyson M. Sullivan-Almeida.

The donation will allow for improvements to several areas of the course, particularly the third, fourth and fifth holes, according to the announcement.

Trufant, son of the late Philip and Dorothy Trufant, made the gift in memory of his parents, the original owners of the golf course prior to its purchase by the town in 1985. Over the last decade, the Golf Course Committee has worked with Trufant regarding subdivision planning and associated land filings connected to the property.

In honoring his father’s vision for the golf course, Trufant’s donation will help make possible improvements and enhancements that Philip Trufant had hoped to see during his lifetime. The town formally voted to accept the land donation at its most recent Town Meeting.
