BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. (KOAM) — Baxter Springs Golf and Country Club is introducing a new generation of players to the sport by hosting a junior golf camp.
The camp covers fundamental golf skills. Younger campers focused on control, while older participants worked on putting, swinging and chipping.
Coach Jonathon Beck said the camp launched last year with about 18 kids spanning first through eighth grade. The response this year pushed organizers to divide the program by age group.
“We started this last year as a way of helping grow the sport,” Beck said. “Last year we had about 18 kids from about first grade to eighth grade. This year we had to split it up between elementary and middle school because we had so many interested in this.”
Beck said the elementary session alone brought in 20 participants.
“We are just trying to grow the sport as much as we can so we have more players once we get to the high school age,” said Beck.
The camp runs for three days and concludes with a tournament where the kids put their new skills to the test in competition.
Beck said the effort is part of a broader push to expand junior golf access across the region.
“Right now Southeast Kansas is trying to open up more opportunities for junior golfers all the way from six years old all the way to 18 years old,” Beck said. “So we’re trying to get more interest in this. Try to keep this going for as long as we can.”
