In the recent Women’s Club-sponsored Taco Tuesday event, 40 golfers signed up and were, by the Women’s Club, distributed into 10 four-person teams. The tournament was nine holes, the back nine, shotgun start, beginning at 4:30 p.m. The novel and fun format was called a Vegas Scramble. Each team was given one die. Numbers were assigned to each team player, one to four.
After each team member teed off, the die was rolled. If the die rolled a number one and that was you and you hit your drive deep in the woods or into the pond, the team had to use your drive. Likewise, if you hit your ball 300 yards down the middle and a one was rolled, the team would have been pleased to use your drive. Thank you. If a five or six was rolled, the team, like a normal scramble, could choose which ball to hit next. After the team drive was selected, the event turned into a normal scramble with teams choosing which ball to use next. The die roll only determined which ball to use off the tee.
Though we did not place, the team I was on, Aisea Taukaye, Bill Betts, Dan Garcia and me, did not once have to hit a bad drive. Oh, we had bad drives, but the die was forgiving. Placing first was the team of Bill Brekus, Dave Sroaf, Dave Gillett and Diane Maxey, shooting a Vegas team five under par. Second-place winners were the team of Gene Sallinen, Chuck Saiz, Terry Remos and Ray Maxey, shooting a team two under par. Two under par is exactly what the third-place team shot also but lost to the second-place team in a card-off. The third-place Vegas winners were the team of Sonny Hanover, Darrell Godwin, Wyatt Nichols and Nancy Acosta. Los Galliotos once again provided the tasty tacos, chicken, beef or just cheese, as well as salad, beans and rice, with different Women’s Club members contributing cookies and brownies. On June 14, in the Men’s Club-sponsored two-best-ball event, Lindy Peters and Dave Coddington placed second in the third flight. What we didn’t know was that Lindy shot a net eagle, two under par, on the fourth hole, and he missed a hole-in-one on Hole No. 2 by a mere 2 inches. Lindy got two pops, or strokes, on No. 4 and dropped a 32-foot putt for the eagle. Very nice, Lindy. Keep it going for your NCGA Championship match coming up soon on July 6 and 7 at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
My son and grandson and I played a pre-Father’s Day round of golf on June 20 at Sea Ranch Golf Links. I haven’t played Sea Ranch in quite a while. It was nice. The course was in good shape and the electric carts were fantastic. The brakes were automatic. Nothing to push on. Come to a stop and the brakes set. Going downhill, the brakes automatically set your speed. Here’s something to stimulate your mind. If there are two fathers, two sons, one grandfather and one grandson in a golf group, how many people are there?
