CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – The Truist Championship will tee off at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte this week, and one huge name will not be playing.
Scottie Scheffler — the world’s top-ranked golfer — is not in the field of 72 golfers for the May 7-10 tournament.
Scheffler indicated in an April 29 press conference that his reason for skipping the four-day tournament in Charlotte had to do with the timing of the event.
The Truist Championship, which is a 2026 signature event, is sandwiched between another signature event and the PGA Championship — one of golf’s four major tournaments. Scheffler played in the April 30-May 3 Cadillac Championship and will seek to defend his PGA Championship title from May 14-17.
“I typically don’t love playing the week before a major,” Scheffler said during the April 29 press conference. “It’s nice to have so many tournaments that are really good … If I had it my way I would play every single week out here. But just the nature of our sport and the demand on our time and everything it’s not really possible.”
“If y’all were to walk with me each day of the tournament and see what we have to do in order to play one week, having to do that four weeks in a row … I wouldn’t be able to perform my best,” he went on. “So when I show up at a tournament I want to be able to give it my best and I have to set up my schedule in a certain way and, you know, the chips kind of fall where they do.”
The 29-year-old Scheffler won at Quail Hollow in 2025, when the course hosted the PGA Championship. That win was his fourth major victory, and gave him three of the four legs needed for the career grand slam. He is only missing a U.S. Open title.
While Scheffler is out at Quail Hollow in 2026, the world’s second-ranked golfer, Rory McIlroy is in.
The Charlotte course has been a good place for McIlroy in the past. He has four wins there, with the most recent coming in 2024.
In addition to McIlroy, fellow top 10 golfers Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Collin Morikawa, Tommy Fleetwood, J.J. Spaun and Xander Schauffele are also in the 2026 Truist Championship field.
