A golf club has been used as a weapon in a violent road rage attack in Melbourne, leaving the victim with severe bruising and his car undriveable.

Police allege the victim was travelling through roadworks on the Melton Hwy, between Banchory Ave and Calder Park Dr, in Sydenham about midday on Saturday when another vehicle slammed into the back of his car several times.

Once clear of the roadworks, the shaken driver pulled over — and the alleged offender did the same.
