CROMWELL, Conn. (WFSB) – A group of Norwegian fans who traveled to the United States for the World Cup spent Sunday at the Travelers Championship cheering on Viktor Hovland, who is tied for the lead and headed to a Monday playoff.
Friends Marcus, Matt, Ariel and Eric traveled to Boston for the World Cup, took a trip to Atlantic City, and then made their way to Connecticut for their first visit to the state.
“We don’t know so much about Connecticut but this is fantastic,” said Eric, Norwegian fan.
Fans follow Hovland from first tee to 18th hole
The group could be heard cheering from the first tee to the 18th hole, shouting support for Hovland throughout the round.
“We’ve been here for the World Cup and we see Hovland just leading off in the leaderboard Sunday. Absolutely electric, incredible!” one fan said.
Hovland, who finished Sunday tied for the lead at -21, said the crowd support was not something he typically receives on the course.
“I think the World Cup obviously brings some extra ones and the jerseys. It was awesome,” Hovland said.
Playoff set for Monday
Hovland did not clinch outright on the final hole, setting up a Monday playoff. The Norwegian fans said they plan to attend before heading to Texas for their next World Cup match.
“Mostly the soccer but this second. Beating Scheffler in playoff is what I’m going to remember most,” one fan said.
