HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – After the cancellation of The Sentry tournament on Maui, which would have taken place last week, the PGA Tour is teeing off in the islands with the 2026 Sony Open.
Kahu Curt Kekuna welcomed spectators with a blessing Monday morning at Waialae Country Club.
The Sony Open brings 120 of the world’s top golfers to Oahu, where they’ll compete for a share of the $9.1 million purse.
It marks the start of the PGA Tour schedule, but it’s not known how much longer that will be the case.
With the Sentry canceled at Kapalua, speculation is growing that the tour may be adjusting its future tourney schedule, and there’s an outside chance that this may be the final Sony Open in Hawaii.
Tournament director Ray Stosik is not sure what the future holds, but says Hawaii has a history of being an attractive draw for players and is huge for viewership.
“They’re all prime-time East Coast and so from a television perspective, the PGA Tour and the state of Hawaii realize that a lot of people on the East Coast go to work all day and go home,” Stosik said of viewers. “Here it is 6 or 7 o’clock at night in New York and they’re either having their nightcap at one of the local bars or they’re at home watching the beauty of Hawaii and watching golf.”
Stosik adds that this year’s field has some big names, including major champions Jordan Spieth, Colin Morikawa, and Zach Johnson.
The tournament tees off Thursday and runs through Sunday.
