HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC. (WTOC) – Matt Fitzpatrick outlasts Scottie Scheffler in a one-round playoff to win the 2026 RBC Heritage, his second Heritage title.
Fitzpatrick entered Sunday with a three stroke lead and Scottie Scheffler brought it to within one heading onto the final hole. Scheffler just missed a birdie putt but Fitzpatrick left a chip 22 feet short. He eventually bogeyed, sending the two into a playoff.
Fitzpatrick went aggressive on his second shot from the fairway, he said he gave “everything I had with a 4-iron.” From 209 yards to just 13 feet, eventually sinking the birdie putt to claim the plaid tartan jacket. This marks his second win ever at the Heritage, both times he won via a playoff. 2023 he beat Jordan Spieth. “Playoffs are always so tricky,” said Fitzpatrick “it can go either way. In a playoff you have to go out there and grab it and fortunately I did today.”
With the playoff win, this was the fourth time in five years where the RBC Heritage champion had to win a playoff battle.
Matt grew up coming to the Heritage with his family as a spectator and just finished his 12th time playing the course on the PGA Tour. His wife Katherine and his mom and dad were in attendance and made it feel like perhaps he was a little kid again. “Any win with family is incredible. It means the world, it’s a place that I love coming to and have done so for a long time. To win twice, a tournament that I dreamed of winning when I was a little kid coming here, doesn’t seem real really.”
Born in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, Matt became the first international player to win the Heritage twice. “I love everything about this place, it’s so special.”
This marks his second win on Tour this season after winning the Valspar Championship.
