Westhoughton Golf Club will tee off for a good cause on August 7 as members host their annual Prostate Cancer Awareness Day.
The fundraising event will feature a series of light-hearted competitions alongside golf, while encouraging men to be aware of the signs of prostate cancer and the importance of early diagnosis.

The event is organised by Brian Taylor, a golfer at Westhoughton Golf Club, who decided to do it after his friend – also called Brian – was diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Mr Taylor said: “We’ll have things like the two-person golf tournament, indoor darts with golf balls.
“We’ve also got a ‘longest drive with a marshmallow’ competition – you’d be surprised how far some of the guys can hit them!

“People have started taking it very seriously. Some people say they think the pink ones fly further, some people say the white ones. Other guys discuss specific methods of hitting them.
“One guy managed to win two years in a row, which was impressive.
“I used to be in the army and I had a ceremonial Kukri knife from a team event we did. We use that as a trophy – we get it engraved every year with different names.

Brian set up the Westhoughton Golf Club Prostate Cancer Awareness Day after another friend of his – also called Brian – was diagnosed with prostate cancer.
“He said his shoulder was hurting, so he went to the doctor. They did blood tests and they discovered he had prostate cancer.
“He was fine in the end because they managed to catch it early, but that’s the important thing.

“It’s especially important to do the event at the golf club because of the age of the people that come here.”
