CROMWELL, Conn. (WFSB) – Eric Cole leads the Travelers Championship after the opening round at TPC River Highlands at 7-under par.
Cole was in the second group of the day and shot 30 on the back nine with three birdies and an eagle on hole 13.
Scottie Scheffler, the 2024 champion, and Matt Fitzpatrick, a three-time winner on the tour this season, are tied for second at 6-under par.
Local star James solid despite late bogeys
Milford’s Ben James shot a solid 2-under par in the opening round. James played well through 16 holes with birdies on holes 2, 6, 9 and 13, but bogeys on holes 17 and 18 cost him down the stretch.
The field features most of the top 50 golfers as ranked by the World Golf Ranking, including Scheffler, Cameron Young, Matt Fitzpatrick, Russell Henley, Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose, J.J. Spaun, Collin Morikawa and last year’s winner Keegan Bradley.
The tournament began with a pro-am on Wednesday. The official tournament continues Friday through Sunday.
The weather Thursday was perfect for play and the course is in prime condition.
