A life-size crocheted model of Tommy Fleetwood has taken pride of place in Churchtown Village in time for The 154th Open – and it’s got the legendary golfer to a tee!
The dashing double, complete with flowing locks and sporty cap, is standing between benches outside St Cuthbert’s Church in Moss Lane.
And it’s an amazing likeness for the Southport-born sportsman who’s hoping for a hometown victory in the golfing championship which starts proper at Royal Birkdale tomorrow.
It’s been created by nifty knitters from the Southport Hookers who say on their Facebook page:
“Sometimes our mad ideas really do come true.”

It’s not the only model of Mr Fleetwood by the guerilla artists who won the prestigious Sefton Arts Award at the 2026 Grand Pride of Sefton Awards in April – after a year in which they’d made headlines all over the world when they created a life-size crocheted Supermarine Spitfire which they installed in Town Hall Gardens on Lord Street in Southport.
The Southport Hookers, who meet in a secret location to crochet their artworks, are well known for their imaginative postbox toppers which they put around Southport and have included mini woollen versions of Willy Wonka, Paddington Bear, Tigger, and more.
Needless to say, Tommy Fleetwood has also been immortalised as a topper and is currently starring on top of a postbox at Hillside Bridge outside Hillside Station – the nearest postbox to Royal Birkdale.
In that the golfer, dressed in natty blue trousers and stripey blue top, can be seen lining up a putt at the 18th hole, watched closely by his caddy.
The Southport Hookers say:
