King of the Course Pick for Royal Birkdale

Rory McIlroy is my pick to be the King of the Course at the final major of the year. McIlroy has played a smaller schedule this week, making it very clear that his emphasis is on performing at the majors. That obviously paid off when he won his second consecutive green jacket in April. McIlroy played well last week, with a T7 finish in Scotland. McIlroy’s major victories over the last two years seem to have taken a serious weight off his shoulders. He now has a more relaxed attitude and a desire to attack these majors.

Rory McIlroy has always played great at this event. He is incredibly experienced, playing this event 16 times. He was the champion back in 2014. He has finished in the top 10 in eight of those 16 events. That includes three of his past four starts at this event. The last time this event was played at Royal Birkdale was in 2017. McIlroy finished in fourth place that year. He has played great at this event and at this course in particular.

The King of the Course is all about picking the player who rolls in the most birdies and eagles. That is why McIlroy is such a strong choice. He ranks fifth on the PGA TOUR in birdie average and second in scoring average. He is the best driver of the golf ball in the world, and the lack of wind expected on Thursday and Friday means that McIlroy can be more aggressive off the tee. If McIlroy’s putter gets hot, he could come out to a big lead in this tournament. He is right alongside Scottie Scheffler as the best players in the world, but McIlroy is in much better form coming into this week.
