MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The Marquette County Junior Golf Club hosted their 26th annual tournament on July 29th at Gentz Homestead Golf Course.
Golfers take the course for six weeks starting in June to prepare for the day, and it all culminates in a celebration of golf and the end of the season.
Coaches like Kenn Hruska preach that their mission is to teach more than just tee to green.
“We are not just teaching golf skills; we’re teaching life skills,” Hruska said. “We’re building positive self-identity, we’re building these kids up, we’re getting them to work with each other.”
The Junior Golf Club continues to provide a platform for local golfers, from youth up until the college level.
Boden Moore, who will be joining Northern Michigan University’s golf team this fall, accredits the club for a large part of his growth.
“It’s been one of the biggest aspects just growing up out here with all my buddies and every week we just come out to compete against each other. It kind of was the motivating factor, especially when I was younger to go out and practice in the middle of the week to get better,” Moore said.
