ORLANDO, Fla. — The Arnold Palmer Invitational has been selected to be part of the PGA Tour Championship Series starting in 2028, the tournament announced.

The Championship Series, which will launch in 2028, will be the upper level of a two-tier competitive model that operates concurrently with the PGA Tour. It will include 23-24 tournaments — including 15 regular-season events, The Players Championship, the Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, the PGA Championship, the Tour Championship as part of a reimagined postseason and an annual international team event like the Presidents Cup or Ryder Cup. It will include the Olympic Games in 2028. Ten of the 15 regular-season events have been selected, including the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The full Championship Series for 2028 will be released at a later date.

Each Championship Series tournament will have a prize purse of at least $20 million.

About 130 golfers will be eligible for the Championship Series each year. A consistent points structure will be utilized for all PGA Tour Championship Series events, and at least the top 90 players in points will be retained from the previous year’s points list.

There also will be a Challenger Series. Players in that series who win multiple PGA Tour Challenger Series events in the same season or qualify for and win a major championship could be promoted mid-season. At least 20 Challenger Series players will be promoted each year. Those players who fail to retain membership in the Championship Series will face potential relegation to the Challenger Series.

A last chance series of four to six events will be held in the fall featuring players who did not have enough points to remain on the Championship Series or who failed to be promoted from the Challenger Series. Those competitions will determine some of the final spots on the PGA Tour Championship Series for the following season.
