SHERMAN, Texas (KXII) – Ashten’s Compassion held its fourth annual fundraising golf tournament at Stone Creek Golf Course Saturday morning, raising money to take 150 children in need Christmas shopping later this year.
J. Davis, founder of Ashten’s Compassion, said the tournament is the organization’s primary fundraising event of the year.
“This is how we raise the money for the Shop with a Cop. Throughout the year, we do small fundraisers, but this is our major event,” Davis said. “Without the sponsors and players, we wouldn’t be able to take kids Christmas shopping during December.”
The mission behind the tournament
Davis started Ashten’s Compassion in honor of his late daughter, Ashten, to carry on her legacy of serving others. The nonprofit raises money throughout the year in partnership with local law enforcement, then takes children in need holiday shopping one to two weeks before Christmas.
Davis said every element of the tournament represents a child in need.
“Every player out here is a representative of a kid, every time you drive by and you see a sponsor sign, that’s a kid also,” Davis said. “We cannot do it without the community support, and we want to thank everyone for that.”
Davis said the turnout at the tournament, combined with the children’s reactions at Christmas, makes the work meaningful.
“It means everything to us because at the end, Ashten wouldn’t want it any other way,” he said.
