MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Earlier this week, it was announced that the FedEx St. Jude Championship will not be a premier “Championship Series” event on the PGA Tour calendar after 2027.
The decision follows the Tour’s June announcement of a new format starting in 2028, which splits the February-to-August schedule into a 15-city premier “Championship Series” and a 20-event, lower-tiered “Challenger Series.” Notably, the June announcement made no mention of FedEx Corp., whose title sponsorship contract expires in 2027. FedEx has served as the financial backbone of the Tour’s postseason since 2007.
Robert Miller, the Executive Director of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, spoke to Action News 5’s Parker King on what the changes mean.
Miller says the PGA changes come from players asking for more challenges and increase the competition level.
“We’ve been lucky enough to have a playoff event since ‘22,” Miller said.
He notes that the changes are not a direct shot at Memphis, as Atlanta is another city losing their championship status, which it’s had for 27 years.
Miller says despite the changes, Memphis is still on the rise as a golf city and hopes people still appreciate the two championship events left in 2026 and 2027.
“Whatever tournament they (PGA) do give us, we will maximize it and make sure Memphis looks good doing it,” Miller said.
