GREENSBORO, N.C. — For the second time in his young career, Connecticut native Ben James finds himself at the top of the leaderboard at the midway point of a PGA tournament.
James, 23 from Milford, fired a second-round 67 on Friday to go with his opening-round 62 for a two-day total of 11-under 129, good for the clubhouse lead at the regular-season ending Wyndham Championship.
With half of the field still competing, James, playing in the morning groups, posted his score and has a 2-shot lead over a group of six players that have also completed second-round play. The group includes Alex Smalley, Sahith Theegala, Alex Noren, David Skinns, Max Greyserman and Doug Ghim.
The Wyndham Championship is the final regular-season event of the 2026 season before the start of the FedEx playoffs.
James, who had a pair of eagles in his opening round, added another on Friday when he made two on the par-4 10th hole. He had two bogeys to go with three birdies.
The Virginia All-American, who earned his place on the tour with a No. 1 ranking in PGA Tour University, led his debut tournament, the Canadian Open back in June, at the midway point. He faltered over the final two rounds and finished tied for 54th. He has already earned more than $500,000 so far this season.
This is a developing story.
