GREENSBORO, N.C. — Kiefer Mills has made the short drive up from Randolph County multiple times over the years to watch the Wyndham Championship. It’s an experience he looks forward to each summer.
“Just being around the PGA golfers themselves because they just seem like down-to-Earth people to me,” said Mills. “I’m always around good fans, too.”
It gives fans like Mills a chance to learn a thing or two.
“I like to utilize how these guys play and see if it can help my game a little bit,” said Mills.
Sunday marks the last day for Wyndham Rewards as the title sponsor of the PGA Tour event in Greensboro, which was founded in 1938 as the Greater Greensboro Open.
“Their agreement ends at the end of the year,” said Mark Brazil, executive director of the Wyndham Championship. “We still haven’t announced anything beyond that yet.”
Brazil says the tournament brings in more than $40 million annually to Greensboro and the surrounding area and gives professional golfers opportunities to give back to the community.
“This means a great deal to this community and the community comes out for it,” said Brazil.
It’s something Brazil says wouldn’t be possible without Wyndham’s partnership.
“Twenty years in sports is a really long time,” said Brazil. “Without them, we don’t have this huge PGA Tour event here every year.”
Earlier this month, the state General Assembly approved a $40 million plan to go toward keeping a PGA Tour event in Greensboro.
