ARDMORE, PA — And then there were eight.
It’s time for the quarterfinals of the 126th U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club. The week began with 213 players vying for their shot to hoist the Havemeyer Trophy, and now only eight are left standing. By day’s end, that number will be down to four.

It’ll be Carter Loflin against Jack Whaley in the first semifinal and Jay Leng Jr. and Logan Reilly in the second semifinal at Merion come Saturday. All matches are in the books with more than an hour left in the broadcast. A dominating performance by every winner on Friday.

Jack Whaley’s push for the Walker Cup continues. He wins, 5 and 4, and will be in the first semifinal match come Saturday.
Jay Leng Jr. is first U.S. Amateur semifinalist
What a run for Jay Leng Jr. He dominates down the stretch (after a bad range session) and wins 6 and 5 over Jack Turner. He’s the first semifinalist.
Logan Reilly grows lead on local
Michael Lugiano is trying to use the Pennsylvania crowd to his advantage, but he’s going to have to come from behind on Auburn sophomore Logan Reilly, who’s 2 up thru 6 after this birdie.
Brandon Knight won three of the first four holes and was 2 up thru 4, but Georgia fifth-year Carter Loflin won the fifth and the seventh to tie the match. The first match off is nearing the turn.
Every match has an advantage early on, with Jay Leng Jr. leading Jack Turner 2 up thru three holes. Leng, who won the Western Amateur 12 days ago, is 7-0 in match play the last two weeks. He’s w under thru three holes.
Jack Whaley making early statement
The lone Englishman remaining admitted Thursday he was fired up to try to make the GB&I Walker Cup team, especially after hearing those not picked had received texts or messages that they would be picked. Whaley is 2 up after two on Adam Bresnu and looks to make a statement.
Brandon Knight goes 1 up thru 1
And we’re off at Merion, and Brandon Knight is off to a hot start. He birdies the first hole and goes 1 up against Carter Loflin.
